Who is this for?

Dexmedetomidine is an injection used in hospitals to help patients stay calm and lightly sedated, especially in intensive care units (ICU). It works by acting on certain receptors in the brain that reduce anxiety, lower heart rate, and help you relax without putting you fully to sleep.

Binds selectively to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the central nervous system, inhibiting norepinephrine release and activating inhibitory pathways that produce sedation, analgesia, and anxiolysis. This action also reduces sympathetic outflow, resulting in decreased heart rate and blood pressure while maintaining airway reflexes.

Is Dexmedetomidine safe to take with another drug?

This drug is not something you take at home — it is given only by doctors or nurses in a hospital setting through a drip (IV infusion). The dose is carefully calculated based on your body weight and adjusted depending on how deeply sedated you need to be. A common starting dose is a slow drip of 0.2 to 0.7 micrograms per kilogram per hour.

Since this drug is given continuously through a drip by hospital staff, a missed dose is not something you need to worry about. The medical team monitors and adjusts it in real time.

Mixing with other sedatives or sleeping drugs can make you dangerously drowsy and lower your heart rate too much. Blood pressure medications taken alongside can cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low. Alcohol must be completely avoided as it greatly increases the sedation effect.

This injection is stored in hospitals. It should be kept at room temperature (below 25°C), away from direct sunlight and heat. It should not be frozen. Keep away from children at all times.
