Who is this for?
Colestyramine (sold as Questra in Nigeria) is a powder medicine that works by binding to cholesterol and bile acids in your gut, preventing your body from absorbing them, so they pass out in your stool instead.
Binds to bile acids in the intestinal lumen, forming insoluble complexes that prevent their reabsorption in the terminal ileum and increase fecal excretion. This reduces the bile acid pool, thereby lowering serum cholesterol levels and decreasing circulating bile acids that cause pruritus and diarrhoea.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not double up to make up for the missed dose.
Always buy Questra or any colestyramine product from a licensed pharmacy; do not buy from roadside sellers or unregistered shops as the powder must be stored properly. Take your other medications separately from colestyramine to avoid it blocking their effect. If you experience persistent constipation, drink plenty of water and eat fibre-rich foods like vegetables and fruits, and tell your doctor.
Colestyramine can block the absorption of many other medicines, so take all other drugs at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after colestyramine. It reduces the effect of warfarin (blood thinner), thyroid medicines, and even some blood pressure drugs. It can also block absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), so your doctor may recommend vitamin supplements.

Colestyramine is not well absorbed into the body so it may be used in pregnancy if truly needed, but it can reduce vitamin absorption which can affect both mother and baby. Always consult your doctor before using it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it near windows or in your car. Keep the powder dry and away from moisture. Always keep it out of reach of children.
