ACE Inhibitor (Blood Pressure Medicine)
Last reviewed July 2026
Who is this for?
Captopril is a blood pressure-lowering drug that works by relaxing your blood vessels so blood can flow more easily, reducing the strain on your heart.
Inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), preventing conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, thereby reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. This decreases systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure while reducing sodium and water retention.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.
Avoid taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium while on captopril, as this can cause dangerously high potassium levels. NSAIDs like ibuprofen (commonly used for body pain in Nigeria) can reduce captopril's effect and harm your kidneys. Alcohol can make the blood pressure-lowering effect too strong, causing dizziness or fainting.
